Marshmallow Root for Horses

  • scour
  • colic recovery
  • ulcers
  • colitis
  • coughing
  • poor digestion

Horses in full, hard work or those prone to colic (especially in association with ulcers), may benefit from regular marshmallow supplementation. While marshmallow is a safe gut protector, always obtain advice to locate causes of any ongoing issues such as ulcers.

Marshmallow contains high levels of Vitamin A, calcium, zinc as well as iron, sodium, iodine, B-complex and large carbohydrate molecules that make up the mucilage which coats the body’s internal wall lining.

Althaea officinalis

Marshmallow has long been considered one of the most benevolent of herbs, renowned for its soothing and softening actions. Contains pectin, a soluble fibre for enhancing intestinal function and maintaining blood sugar levels. Marshmallow's mucilages are compounds which, when combined with water, form a slippery, slimy, semi-solid texture which has soothing and protective properties for surfaces such as the lining of the digestive tract or the skin. In addition, mucilages have the ability to bind toxins and wastes to themselves and thereby aid in their removal from the body.

Feeding Instructions

1-2 tablespoons per day (500kg horse)

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Fibre- and mucilage-containing herbs such as marshmallow have the potential to slow and/or reduce the absorption of any drugs taken simultaneously with them. Although this effect, in the case of marshmallow, is likely to be minor, it is advisable to leave a couple of hours between the administration of any drug medications and marshmallow.
